The Kennel Club (KC) Fit For Function: Fit For Life campaign aims to make breeders, judges and puppy buyers aware of the opportunities there are to work with the Kennel Club on health related issues and reminds them that a dog’s health should be the most important consideration in any decisions they make.

There are many aspects to their campaign and many ways to achieve their aim - to ensure that the majority of pedigree dogs live without any illness that would be detrimental to their quality of life and this is increased so that every single dog has the opportunity to live a healthy life.

This includes halting the trend towards exaggeration in certain breeds, encouraging participation in and funding of research into health testing, the education of judges and developing even further their Assured Breeder Scheme, which is absolutely crucial to their success and is the point where breeders, dog buyers and the Kennel Club can all come together to ensure that all dogs truly are Fit For Function: Fit For Life.

Their view of the future is - we all join in their campaign and help to improve the lives of dogs!

The Kennel Club will continually work to improve the health and welfare of all dogs and to represent breeders and dog lovers who care as passionately as they do about their future. To find out about their plans for the future and how you can help them to succeed with their plans - whether you are a breeder, judge or a dog owner, please look at the details on their website, the link is at the bottom of the list opposite.

Responsible breeders are the future of dogs in the UK. Whether breeding cross breeds or pedigrees, breeders have a responsibility to do all they can to help ensure that their puppies are healthy and well adjusted and their breeding bitches are cared for.
There are a number of steps that responsible breeders can take to help improve the health and welfare of our nation’s dogs.

• Health Test - Have the recommended health tests for your dogs carried out before they are bred from.

• Breed away from exaggeration - Choosing the two dogs that you will mate is an important decision and it is vital that you make that choice upon the basis of the future health of breed, as well as your individual litter. It is important that dogs are not bred for exaggerated features that will be detrimental to their health.
